If you have ever been here before you probably know how much I love using DIY scrubs and masks. I love finding what works and sharing it with all of you! Recently I whipped up this classic DIY charcoal sugar scrub. It works as both a mask and a scrub which means you get great exfoliation, the detoxifying and unclogging power of charcoal, and a nice soothing mask that keeps skin hydrated and soft.
You know I love charcoal! It works wonders for my skin and works hard to lift all the junk that gets buried in my pores. This DIY Blackhead Removing Mask is proof of how well it works. Another great scrub for when you don’t have time to make your own is the Tarte Frxxxtion Stick, you can check it out and read my review by clicking above. With just three simple ingredients you can make this DIY charcoal sugar scrub mask at home!
One of the reasons I really enjoy this DIY charcoal sugar scrub is because I can make a batch of it and keep it on hand. Believe it or not I don’t always have time to make a scrub or mask from scratch when I have a few minutes to apply. If I know I’m in a hurry I just grab a premixed mask or scrub and do my thing! This recipe will make enough scrub for quite a few applications. You can store it in a plastic container, a mason jar, or even just a zipper bag. Something that is semi air tight will work best. I like to use mason jars or their plastic equivalent because I keep my DIY charcoal sugar scrub mask in the shower.
If I keep it in the shower I’m more likely to use it on a regular basis. During the Winter months I especially enjoy this recipe because it allows me to remove dead skin from my elbows and knees. Fighting dry skin is always an uphill battle for me.
DIY Charcoal Sugar Scrub
I’m not exaggerating even a little bit when I say that this is one of the simplest sugar scrub recipes around…It will take you no time at all to whip up! Basically these simple ingredients offer amazing benefits. The EVOO or the Coconut Oil will keep skin soft and moisturized without clogging pores. The sugar in this recipe acts as a natural exfoliate which will help remove dead skin, reveal brighter healthier looking skin, and unclog pores. Lastly, the charcoal removes toxins, helps brighten skin, and absorbs all the grime and slime that gets buried deep in your skins pores!

The charcoal stained my skin so bad.. am I doing something wrong?
I’m so sorry I’m just seeing this! I’ve done a little research just quickly after seeing this and it seems that this can happen to some people. No one seems to know why some and not others. Some kind of skin sensitivity. I’ve never had this happen to my face or even my legs or feet when I use it and I often leave it on quite long. I would say if you try it again to lessen the amount of charcoal powder and try to avoid letting it sit on your skin for extended periods of time.

I have loose activated charcoal. Approximately how much is in 3 capsules? Thanks! Can’t wait to try this.
Hmm I’ve never measured it out that way but I would guess about 1/2 Tbsp. would be sufficient! If it doesn’t seem quite dark enough you can always add a bit more!
Love these instructions.

Can I use regular cane sugar or sea salt.
You can certainly try! I would only be worried that the more coarse the texture the more aggressive the exfoliation will be. Keep that in mind when using it so you don’t over exfoliate or harm your skin!

Have you ever tried putting essential oils in the scrub?
Hi Terra! I have not personally tried it but I would think it would be a great way to get some of those EO benefits and a refreshing twist! If you try it let us know how it goes!!
Are you using coconut oil that will firm up in regular temperatures or the kind that stays runny?
Becky,
I have coconut oil that does fluctuate between semi-solid and liquid. It just depends on the recipe. When I make it if I refrigerate the leftovers I need to warm them up a bit to keep it from being too stiff. I would assume that if you used the liquid type coconut oil you wouldn’t have that issue, otherwise it should work nearly the same. You might just want to use a bit less for a thicket consistency!

Shelf life of charcoal sugar scrub??
I’m not sure to be honest with you. I’ve never kept a batch in the fridge for more than a week or so. I usually try and use it up when I make it. It’s great for exfoliating dry skin so I use it on my legs, my arms, and my face and make a fresh batch when I want to do it again!

In which body area you can use just elbow, knees and face?
And For how long can you store like 1 month or 2 or 3 months
I only store it for maybe a week or two at a time. As long as it keeps the same consistency I would think it would be fine. And I use it anywhere that I have rough skin or want to exfoliate. It works great on feet too!
